It is said that the eyes are windows to the soul. This painting explores the soul of Park Avenue in Riverside CA, as seen simultaneously from an outsider perspective into a local’s point of view. The eye belongs to Eastside resident Violet Marquez, who has called this neighborhood home for 55 years. She has experienced the neighborhood's shifting landscape: from the hardships of segregation and racial gang violence of the 1990s, to the promise of renewal brought on by recent growth and redevelopment. Her gaze reflects the hope of a new day's sunrise, her love for her neighborhood and a lifetime of memories.
