Lingering in Today’s Light builds on the reflection begun in other works. As an adult, I hold the same chain-link fence, gazing toward the distant landscape of my Guatemalan home. My Zorro mask, a recurring motif, gestures to identity and the challenges of the immigrant experience. A yellow sign on the fence depicts a masked child in motion, while graffiti spelling “PEST” evokes one of the many societal and personal barriers tied to leaving home. The painting reflects on memory, longing, and the ongoing negotiation of identity.
