Scotty Cummings - Persevering Blue Tiger
Persevering Blue Tiger, 2025

Ceramic
"Wheel thrown, trimmed, and hand-painted ceramic vase with a tattoo inspired tiger illustration fired to cone 10 in a gas reduction kiln. The tiger was hand-painted pre-bisque firing on leather-hard clay using underglaze. After bisque, transparent glaze was brushed on the tiger, and then an added a layer of wax resist to the top of that to protect the image before a combination of pouring and dip glazing the rest of the surface. The exterior is winokur yellow on top of red purple shino with a dripping chun blue near the rim. The interior is chun blue over red purple shino. A crawling tiger, often seen in tattoos or artwork, typically symbolizes strength, power, and resilience. It can also represent courage, ferocity, and the ability to overcome obstacles so this imagery seemed fitting considering the context of the "Hold The Vision" gallery exhibition."
