James Supa Medrano - Just Do it
Just Do It, 2025
Acrylic on wood panel
"In alignment with the exhibition’s theme, “a gentle reminder to stay close to what lights us up, fuels us, and keeps us coming back no matter what changes around us,” this piece reflects the tension between external chaos and inner resolve.
The fire serves as a symbol of the turbulent forces that continue to shape our world — from natural disasters to war and civil unrest. It embodies the overwhelming, often unpredictable nature of global events that surround us daily.
Amid this backdrop, the smiley face represents myself as the artist — a quiet but deliberate reminder to hold onto optimism. The upward gaze of the smiley’s eyes signifies a conscious choice to look beyond the disorder, centering my focus on creativity, passion, and personal purpose. It embodies resilience: maintaining joy, curiosity, and vision even when faced with uncertainty.
The inclusion of the Nike logo, universally recognized through its “Just Do It” slogan, functions as both a personal and collective call to action. It reflects the discipline required to remain motivated, pursue one’s passions, and stay anchored in what fuels us — especially when distractions, doubts, or external upheaval threaten that focus.
Together, these elements express the ongoing balance between acknowledging global realities and fiercely protecting the inner spark that keeps us moving forward."
